Supporters of Arsenal have flooded to social media this evening to bemoan the lack of consistency from Premier League officials, after seeing their side’s early go-ahead goal versus Newcastle disallowed.
Arsenal vs Newcastle
The Gunners are currently locked in action with Rafael Benitez’s Magpies at the Emirates, in their first outing following the international break.
Unai Emery’s men headed into proceedings in the midst of a tightly-contested battle for a Premier League top-4 spot, on the back of Tottenham’s last-gasp defeat at Liverpool yesterday evening.
Ahead of kick-off in North London tonight, all of Spurs, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea were separated by just a solitary point.
As such, Arsenal no doubt headed into proceedings this evening desperate for a 3-point haul
And the capital giants appeared to have gotten off to the ideal start, when Aaron Ramsey slammed home at the back-post following a Sead Kolasinac flick-on with just 13 minutes on the clock.
However, upon the ball finding the net, referee Anthony Taylor immediately blew his whistle, disallowing the strike for a foul.
Replays showcased the fact that Sokratis had needlessly pulled on the shirt of Florian Lejeune off the ball, leaving Taylor perfectly within his rights to take action.
‘Lack of consistency’
However, in the aftermath of their side’s opener being ruled out, Arsenal’s fans couldn’t help but point to Chelsea’s highly-controversial 2-1 win at Cardiff yesterday afternoon.
The Blues’ 84th-minute equalizer, courtesy of Cesar Azpilicueta, saw the Spaniard nod home whilst in a blatantly offside position.
More relevantly, though, Maurizio Sarri’s men also escaped a number of potential Cardiff spot-kicks, for obvious wrestling and shirt-pulling inside the Blues’ box:
Chelsea yesterday and then that just doesn’t make sense at all

Fuckin unreal, if it were Chelsea it would’ve been a goal and the ref would’ve give them an extra goal as a treat

It probably is a foul but the lack of consistency is absurd. How can Chelsea get away with two of those in the penalty box and then we get a goal ruled out?!

The officials couldn’t see 2 players well offside in the game featuring Chelsea, but they are sharp to spot a small pull.

The sooner VAR is introduced the better. Loads of those went unpunished yesterday Cardiff V Chelsea

Chelsea get away with 4 far worse yesterday and Arsenal punished instantly. Love this game

So Chelsea get away with that 2 times yesterday but the first time an arsenal player holds the opposition’s shirt and it’s a foul no question.
Something just isn’t right @FA

No goal because of that little tug? Did they not see what was happening during corners in the Cardiff/Chelsea game yesterday?

Consistency of refereeing decisions comes to mind. Cardiff Chelsea yesterday. Either give them all the time or not at all.
