Messi’s outburst vs Chile
Lionel Messi and Argentina’s Copa America hopes once again ended in disaster this year.
Argentina were knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual winners, Brazil.
They then had to face Chile in a third-place play-off.
That game was rather interesting with Messi being sent off for what looked to be no reason.
After Messi was sent off in that game, the Barca forward hit out at the Copa America saying it was a set up for Brazil to win and there was corruption:
“There is no doubt, the whole thing is set up for Brazil.
“I did not want to be part of this corruption, we shouldn’t have to be part of this disrepect we suffered during the Copa America.
“We could have gone further but we weren’t allowed into the final. Corruption, referees and all the rest stopped people from enjoying the football.
“I always tell the truth and I’m honest, that is what keeps me calm, if what I say has repercussions that is not my business.” As quoted by the Mirror.
After said outburst, Messi has now received a punishment from the South American footballing body, CONMEBOL.
Messi has been handed a £41,000 fine and suspended from international matches for three months by CONMEBOL.
Messi’s ban means he will miss games against Chile, Mexico and Germany.
However, given all of these games are friendlies, it shouldn’t be too big a problem for Argentina.
