Why didn’t Christian Pulisic feature vs Liverpool?
He’s the only new face in Chelsea’s squad this season, however it’s not been the best of starts at Chelsea for Christian Pulisic.
The American international was left on the bench on Sunday as Chelsea lost 2-1 at home to Liverpool.
Since arriving in west London from Borussia Dortmund, Pulisic has yet to cement a starting place in Frank Lampard’s team.
Against Liverpool, Lampard picked Willian and Mason Mount instead of Pulisic.
Following a couple of first half injuries to defenders, Pulisic ended up staying on the bench against Liverpool.
After the game, Lampard was asked about the US international. The Chelsea boss commented:
[Pulisic] is not a victim of the injuries, but just that I have a squad to pick from.
He played before that a few games, Willian has come back in and been sharp and good.
I decided to go with Mason today because we needed to stay strong in midfield and push Mason up higher up the pitch.
It is just my choice to make and he will get ample opportunities.
Chelsea 1 – Liverpool 2
A stunning strike from Trent Alexander-Arnold blasted Liverpool into a first half lead at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Then, after VAR chalked off a Chelsea goal, Liverpool doubled their lead through a Roberto Firmino header.
N’Golo Kante scored a stunning goal for Chelsea in the second half, but the Blues were unable to find a leveller.
Jose Mourinho fears Chelsea ‘accept defeats’
Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho appeared on Sky Sports on Sunday to offer his insight as an analyst.
When it came to assessing how Chelsea performed against Liverpool, Mourinho made some eye-catching comments:
When you start accepting defeats just because your team played well and just because your players gave their best and they had a performance for people to be proud of in terms of that attitude and commitment.
I think when you get used to it is when the big clubs stop to be big clubs. ‘So I don’t think they get used to it. But I think it shows that people are ready for what this season is going to be for them.
